Trying to get back in the habit of this again while I hurriedly fix the manuscript I’m working on…
This week’s Six comes from a WIP I have on the back-burner at the moment. While the idea is something I really love I’m still trying to get the age-range right; I’m suspecting that to get it to work I may have to age my characters considerably from middle school to high school – but we’ll see. It’s an urban fantasy rework of an Irish/British-ish (though I’ve heard it attributed to various places) folktale I really love. This bit features lead character Colleen who has just moved to Ohio from Florida. She’s talking to a potential new friend and trying to keep certain things hidden.
The Six:
“So why’d you come here?”
Because I’m crazy. Because all the flowers and plants down south talk to me, Colleen thought. She kept her eyes on the scuffed toes of her sneakers and shrugged. “Grandma and Grandpa didn’t think the weather agreed with me, so we moved up here where they have friends.”
“You live with your grandparents,” brand-girl squeaked, stumbling over her Converse sneakers as she did her double-take.

I’m flabbergasted at how much we can gather of your story from those six sentences. There are secrets and questions bursting from it that make me want to pick up this book, turn the pages and find out more. I love the “… all the flowers and plants down south talk to me.” That’s awesome!

The speech patterns of your character sound to me like high schoolish. Very intriguing six.
Thanks! I’m trying for somewhere around that age bracket – I have a pet peeve about YA fiction characters talking too old so it’s good to hear that I’m succeeding!
